Frequently asked questions

Short answers about pricing, connecting, capacity and phone numbers. For account-specific questions, contact support.

Getting started

What is SIP trunking?

SIP trunking connects your PBX (phone system) to the public telephone network over the internet. Instead of traditional phone lines, calls travel over your internet connection. You pay per minute, with no per-channel fee, and you can scale up without ordering circuits.

How do I connect my PBX to IPComms?

Every account gets its own SIP domain in the form yourdomain.s1.ipcomms.net. Point your trunk at it on port 5060 (UDP or TCP) or 5061 (TLS), and authenticate either by registering with your trunk credentials or by IP authentication from a static public IP that you enter in the portal. Allow both IPComms points of presence, 34.23.59.14 and 136.117.213.88, through your firewall so inbound calls reach you from either one. Platform guides: SIP configuration.

Do you offer a free trial?

We offer a 30-day test trunk on request: one local number and a small calling credit, with your card on file but not charged until the trial ends. Request a test trunk. There are no contracts or minimums on a regular account either, so you only pay for what you use.

Technical

What codecs are supported?

G.711 µ-law, G.711 A-law and G.729. The codec is negotiated per call from what your PBX offers.

Do you support TLS and SRTP?

Yes. Connect on port 5061 for TLS (encrypted signaling) with SRTP (encrypted media). Our carrier legs are encrypted as well, so a TLS trunk is encrypted on both sides of the network.

How many concurrent calls can I make?

There is no per-channel fee and no set channel count on an IPComms trunk. New accounts start with a fraud-protection limit that support raises on request; tell us your expected peak. Beyond that, concurrent calls are limited by your bandwidth (about 100 kbit/s per G.711 call, each way) and your PBX. Size it with the channel and bandwidth calculator.

Is every call signed under STIR/SHAKEN?

Yes. Calls that present a number on your account are signed at A attestation, outbound and inbound. That is why outbound caller ID must be a number assigned to your account.

Phone numbers

Can I port my existing numbers?

Yes. Porting costs $5.00 per number, with volume discounts for 100 or more, and takes 3–10 business days depending on the releasing carrier. We coordinate with your current carrier; you supply a recent bill and a signed Letter of Authorization. See number porting.

What geographic coverage do you offer?

Local numbers across US and Canadian area codes, toll-free numbers in the 800, 888, 877, 866, 855, 844 and 833 ranges, and international numbers in selected countries. Search live inventory on phone numbers.

What PBX systems work with IPComms?

Any SIP-compatible PBX or SBC: Asterisk, FreePBX, 3CX, FreeSWITCH, FusionPBX, Issabel, VitalPBX, Yeastar, Microsoft Teams Direct Routing, and commercial systems from Cisco, Avaya and Mitel. Contact center platforms connect by BYOC; see SIP trunking.
